🎒 Kindergarten Registration Is Tomorrow!

Kindergarten registration is almost here — and we can’t wait to meet our newest Boise School District students!

This Thursday, March 5, all Boise elementary schools will host a fun, friendly, and interactive Kindergarten Registration Night. This special evening is the first step in your child’s educational journey — and a wonderful opportunity to connect with your neighborhood school community.

🏆 Boise School District Students Shine at 2026 State Career Development Conference

Students from across the Boise School District delivered an outstanding performance at the 2026 Idaho DECA State Career Development Conference (SCDC), held February 9–11 at the Nampa Civic Center. Three of our four comprehensive high schools earned state-level recognition — demonstrating the strength of our Career Technical Education programs and the real-world readiness of our students.

At the state level, DECA recognizes the Top 6 competitors in each event category, with medals awarded to the top three finishers. Students who score 80% or higher on their written exam also receive a Top Test Score medal.

But beyond medals and trophies, this work matters deeply to our community.

These students are developing the skills Idaho employers are looking for — critical thinking, financial literacy, marketing strategy, public speaking, project management, teamwork, and entrepreneurship. Many of these students will go on to start businesses, manage teams, lead nonprofits, and contribute to our local economy. Their success today reflects a strong future workforce for Boise.

Celebrating Our DTEC Student Volunteers

Please join us in thanking the incredible students from Boise School District’s Dennis Technical Education Center (DTEC) who participated in the January 30 Volunteer Clinic in Nampa.

Students from the Dental Assisting Program, Fundamentals of Health Professions, and our HOSA chapter came together to provide compassionate, professional care to community members in need. Their hands-on training translated into real impact — helping deliver an estimated $99,000 in free medical, dental, and vision services, along with connections to food, clothing, and wellness resources.

We are incredibly proud of how our students represented DTEC and Boise School District — demonstrating skill, leadership, and a true commitment to service.

Our next Volunteer Clinic will be held Saturday, April 25 at HUB 365 Community Center in Boise. If you are interested in participating, we would love to have you join us.

Hands-On Learning in Action at Boise High School 🧠

Students in Anatomy & Physiology at Boise High recently wrapped up their Nervous System unit with a sheep brain dissection — a powerful, hands-on opportunity to explore the real anatomical structures they’ve been studying in class.

Under the guidance of teacher Nikki Clark-Vega, students identified key parts of the brain and connected textbook learning to real-world application. Experiences like this deepen understanding, strengthen critical thinking, and spark interest in careers in healthcare and science.

Why should our community care?

Because this is what college- and career-ready learning looks like. Engaging, real-world experiences support the Boise School District’s Strategic Plan by building strong academic foundations and inspiring curiosity. Today’s lab tables are preparing tomorrow’s medical professionals, researchers, and innovators.

🏆 Four BSD Students Earn 2026 ATTA Kid Student Athlete Awards

Four outstanding Boise School District student-athletes have been named 2026 ATTA Kid Student Athlete Award recipients by the Idaho Youth Sports Commission.

Will Cox and Maddie Whitehead of Timberline High School, Divya Danesh of Capital High School, and Reid Hoppock of Boise High School were selected for exemplifying the qualities of a Triple Impact Competitor — making themselves better, their teammates better, and the game better through character and sportsmanship.

The students will be recognized on social media, featured in the “For the Win” newsletter, honored with a permanent plaque at their schools, and celebrated at the annual “Jeans & Jerseys” Dinner on April 11 at the Boise Centre, where they will receive public recognition before more than 350 guests.

Congratulations to Will, Maddie, Divya and Reid for representing their schools and the Boise School District with integrity, leadership, and heart.

Borah Students Lead with Confidence at Tools for Life Fair

Two students from Borah High School, Levi and Jessie, recently represented their school at the Tools for Life Fair | IATP held February 23 at Boise State University.

Guided by Family and Consumer Science teacher Mitzi Beal, the pair presented simple, accessible, and enjoyable recipes for special needs students in attendance. Their peer-led demonstration provided meaningful, real-world learning and helped build confidence and life skills in a powerful, relatable way.

Levi and Jessie stepped up with professionalism and enthusiasm, making a genuine impact and representing Borah with pride.

Boise Schools Expand Student-Led Composting Program with Community Support

Thanks to the generous support of The Sangam Foundation of Idaho, Boise School District is expanding its Food Waste Diversion & Composting Program in partnership with Republic Services and Timbercreek Recycling.

Food waste reduction is one of the most immediate, hands-on ways students can engage in sustainability—and this proven program is already making a meaningful impact at Lincoln Early Learning Center, White Pine Elementary, and Grace Jordan Elementary. With philanthropic support, the program is expanding in 2026 to Garfield, Trail Wind, Hawthorne (see photo), and Whitney elementary schools.

At each participating school, students conduct hands-on waste audits, collect and analyze data, and connect classroom learning in science, math, and engineering to real-world environmental systems. They investigate decomposition and nutrient cycles while applying measurement, graphing, and problem-solving skills to track their school’s progress.

Student-led Green Teams help sustain the effort by promoting stewardship and ensuring student voice remains central to the work. Through collaboration with facilities staff and community service providers, students gain insight into how individual actions connect to larger systems that serve our community.

This investment allows Boise schools to scale effective, equitable sustainability programs that strengthen STEM learning, build environmental literacy, and empower students to design and lead practical climate solutions.

White Pine Elementary students recently explored science, technology, engineering, art, and math during an exciting STEAM Day filled with hands-on experiments, creative projects, and interactive challenges.

Designed to build a stronger school community through shared discovery, the event ensures every student can experience the joy of STEAM during the school day. Activities like these bring Academic Excellence to life—encouraging creativity, critical thinking, and innovation.

A Birthday Surprise to Remember at Fairmont Junior High 🎂💙

Kayli, a Fairmont Junior High School student (pictured), recently learned that sharing your passions can lead to unforgettable moments. After writing a heartfelt letter to Costco Wholesale about how much she loves the store, she received an incredible birthday surprise.

On February 27, Costco representatives visited Fairmont with cupcakes, Costco gear, and even her own Costco name tag. What began as a simple letter turned into a joyful celebration and a reminder that students should never be afraid to share their dreams and use their voice.

Moments like this reflect the Boise School District’s commitment to strong community partnerships and meaningful connections. 🤝 When students feel seen, heard, and supported by the community around them, it strengthens their confidence and belief in what’s possible.

For Your Information: Spring Break Road Closure at Whitney

The Boise School District would like to inform families and community members of a temporary road closure planned during Spring Break (March 14–22, 2026) in front of Whitney Elementary School.

At the request of The Russell Corporation, utility work related to the Whitney Pool project — including water, sewer, and potential power improvements — will take place on Owyhee Street. The District has submitted a letter of support to the Ada County Highway District (ACHD), and the work is pending permit approval.

Although school will not be in session, the Just For Kids childcare program and the Boise City Community Center will remain open. Access to the Whitney parking lot will continue via Nez Perce Street throughout the construction period.

Keeping Our Schools Healthy: Flu Season & Measles Reminder

As we move through peak cold and flu season—and with confirmed measles cases in Canyon County—families are reminded to keep students home when they are sick. Please check children each morning and keep them home if they have symptoms such as fever, vomiting, diarrhea, a new cough, unusual fatigue, sore throat with fever, a new rash, or other symptoms that aren’t typical.

There are no confirmed measles cases in Boise School District schools, but awareness is important. Measles is highly contagious, and vaccination remains the best protection.

READY! for Kindergarten is a free series of parent education workshops that shows how play-based activities help build the academic and social-emotional skills children need for kindergarten success. Parents learn simple, hands-on strategies they can easily use at home.

Boise School Board Selects Wendy Johnson as Next Superintendent, Effective July 1, 2026

January 29, 2026

Boise, ID -- 01/29/2026 -- The Boise School District Board of Trustees has taken a significant step in its leadership transition by voting to offer Wendy Johnson, the District’s current Deputy Superintendent of Teaching and Learning, the position of Superintendent. Johnson has accepted the offer.

The action followed an executive-session interview conducted during a special Board meeting on Thursday, January 29, 2026. The interview was part of a process initiated earlier in the month after the Board formally accepted the retirement of Superintendent Lisa Roberts.

Johnson will begin serving as Superintendent on July 1, 2026. Roberts will continue to serve as Superintendent through June 30, 2026, at which time she will retire.

“I am deeply grateful to the Board of Trustees for their trust and confidence, and for the opportunity to continue serving the Boise community,” Johnson said. “We have an incredibly strong team of educators and leaders in place, and together we are focused on what matters most—our students. Public schools are the heart of strong neighborhoods, and when our community invests in them, we create opportunity for every child and a stronger future for Boise.”

At a January 21, 2026 special meeting, trustees voted to interview Johnson, citing the District’s commitment to leadership development and the depth of experience within its administrative leadership team.

“Wendy has been an integral part of our district’s leadership team and has earned the trust of the Board, staff, and community,” said Boise School Board President Dave Wagers. “She understands our students, our teachers, and our schools, and the Board has great confidence in her ability to lead going forward. Strong public schools are essential to our community’s quality of life and our collective future, and Wendy is deeply committed to ensuring every student has access to a comprehensive and nationally recognized public school education.”

Johnson brings more than three decades of experience in public education, having served Idaho students since 1994 as a classroom teacher and administrator. Her career includes 11 years as Superintendent of the Kuna School District from 2013 to 2024, where she led efforts focused on early learning, academic achievement, pathways for students and community engagement.

In her current role as Deputy Superintendent of Teaching and Learning, Johnson oversees instructional programs, curriculum, assessment, and initiatives designed to improve student outcomes across the district. Her leadership philosophy emphasizes collaboration, transparency, and partnerships among educators, families, and community stakeholders.

The Board also considered interviewing Deputy Superintendent of Operations Nick Smith. Smith respectfully declined consideration, noting that while leading the district would be an honor and a future aspiration, his current focus is on remaining actively involved in the lives of his three young children.

Boise School District Superintendent Lisa Roberts to Retire

Boise, ID – 01/12/2025 – At tonight’s Board of Trustees meeting, Boise School District Superintendent Lisa Roberts announced that she will retire on June 30th, 2026.

“It has been an honor to serve the students and families of our district,” said Superintendent Roberts. “And, I have been fortunate to work with some of the most kind, intelligent, brave and passionate individuals for more than 30 years. For that, I will be eternally grateful. But I am excited to retire alongside my husband and discover new adventures.”

The Board announced that they will hold a special Board meeting at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 21st, 2026 to determine the process for hiring a new superintendent.The meeting will be open to the public and available online.

“There’s no question that our district has become more transparent, open and accountable thanks to Lisa’s leadership,” said Board of Trustees President, Dave Wagers. “She has built a great team that centers every conversation around how we can best serve our students, fully support our employees and strengthen our ties to our community. We’ve been lucky to have her and wish her the very best in retirement.”

Lisa Roberts has served the students and families of the Boise School District for 33 years as a classroom teacher, elementary school principal, Administrator of Student Programs, Borah Area Director and Deputy Superintendent, and Superintendent. She also served on the District’s negotiations team for 18 years. In addition to her role as Superintendent, Mrs. Roberts serves on the St. Luke’s Community Health Board and the University of Idaho’s Education and Health and Human Services Advocacy Board. She has a proven track record of unwavering support and commitment to student and staff well being, mental health, enhancing student outcomes, implementing innovative programs, fostering a positive and inclusive student-centered learning environment, building strong relationships based on trust, transparency and accountability.

Update on Legal Settlements and Ongoing Safety Commitments

Boise School District Provides Update on Legal Settlements and Ongoing Safety Commitments

Boise, ID -- November 18, 2025 -- As part of our commitment to relevant, open and transparent communication, the Boise School District Administration has prepared the following update regarding current legal proceedings involving former employee Gavin Snow.

The Boise School District, in conjunction with our insurance carrier, has reached settlement agreements with the families of seven of the students who have pursued legal action related to the actions of Gavin Snow, a former employee at Valley View Elementary School. The total settlements for these matters amount to $7 million. The original tort claims submitted by the families requested a significantly higher total amount, estimated at approximately $152,500,000.00. Our district’s insurance carrier will cover $2 million. The remaining $5 million will be paid by the district by reducing funding to non-classroom related expenses, including the district’s facility maintenance fund. The District’s contribution toward the settlements will not reduce current classroom instruction or student programming. Funds previously planned for transfer into the Plant Facilities Fund will be adjusted to meet this obligation, ensuring that day-to-day educational operations remain fully supported.

Because of the nature of the settlements, each agreement must be approved by the court before funds are distributed. To date, the court has approved one of the agreements, in the amount of $2,777,000.00.

The Boise School District recognizes the severity and impact these incidents have on the families and our community. As we shared publicly with our Valley View Elementary School community on April 8, 2025, we have taken meaningful steps to strengthen safety, accountability, and transparency. These steps include:

Engaging an independent workplace investigation conducted by an external law firm.
Releasing the Executive Summary of the investigation in accordance with Idaho law.
Implementing policy and procedure updates, in consultation with the Boise Police Department.

Our commitment to improving student safety is ongoing and unwavering. We recognize that restoring trust requires sustained action, and we remain dedicated to ensuring every student feels safe, supported, and valued in our schools.

Boise School Board Appoints New Trustee

During a Special Board meeting held on October 8, 2025, members of the Boise School Board appointed Dr. Alejandro Necochea to fill a vacancy on the Board.

Dr. Necochea was appointed following a month-long public process that included interviews with six applicants. Because Dr. Necochea is unavailable during the October 13, 2025 Board meeting, he will be sworn into office at a future Board meeting or workshop.

Dr. Necochea will serve until the next regular election of the Board of Trustees on Tuesday, September 2, 2026, when he will have the option to run for the unexpired term of the office.

Boise, ID -- 09/15/2025 -- The Boise School District is once again celebrating outstanding academic achievement. Twenty-one of our students have been named National Merit Scholarship Program Semifinalists for 2026, the most of any school district in Idaho.

This accomplishment is remarkable not only for its size but also for its proportion. Our 21 semifinalists represent 24% of Idaho’s total 87 semifinalists statewide, even though Boise School District students account for only about 7% of Idaho’s public school enrollment (based on the latest state enrollment figures from Fall 2024).

“These results highlight the excellence of our students and the dedication of our teachers, families, and community who support them,” said Boise School District Superintendent Lisa Roberts. “We are incredibly proud of these semifinalists and what they represent for the future of education in our state.”

Boise School District Honors Trustee Maria Greeley with Distinguished Service Award

On September 8, 2025, the Boise School District Board of Trustees proudly recognized Trustee Maria Greeley with the Distinguished Service Award in honor of her 12 years of exemplary service to the students, families, and staff of the District.

A Legacy of Leadership and Advocacy

Since joining the Board in 2013, Trustee Greeley has demonstrated unwavering dedication to ensuring every student has access to a high-quality education. She has served as Vice-Chair of the Board for the past decade and contributed her leadership to key committees, including the Governance, Facilities, Strategic Planning, and Superintendent Evaluation committees.

A proud mother of four Borah High School graduates, Greeley brought to her role a deep, personal understanding of the importance of strong public schools. Her advocacy for academic rigor, diverse course offerings, and equitable opportunities for all students has left a lasting impact on the Boise School District.

Connecting With School Communities

Throughout her tenure, Trustee Greeley prioritized visiting each of the District’s schools. By spending time in classrooms and meeting with educators and administrators, she gained valuable insights into the strengths and needs of each school community. Her commitment to building these connections reinforced the Board’s dedication to serving all students.

Service Beyond the Boardroom

Trustee Greeley’s service to public education began long before her role on the Board. She co-chaired the campaign to reject the Luna Laws and was a member of “Friends of Boise,” a community group that supported the successful 2012 levy to maintain class sizes. She also engaged in professional learning and advocacy at the state and national level, bringing back best practices to benefit Boise students.

A Lasting Impact

Trustee Appointment Process Announced

Board of Trustees Accepts Greeley Resignation; Announces Timeline and Process for Appointment

Boise, ID – (09/8/2025) – At their regularly scheduled September Board meeting, the Boise School District Board of Trustees formally accepted the resignation of Trustee Maria Greeley, as well as established the timeline to fill the vacancy on the Board.

Trustee Greeley had stated her intention to resign in August, following the announcement that her husband was transferring to Singapore for work. The process to fill the vacancy created by Trustee Greeley’s resignation will follow a modified process under Regulation 1131(R) - Filling Vacancies on the Board of Trustees.

Trustee Appointment Timeline

Sept 9, 2025 - September 26, 2025 (until noon): The candidate application process is open, and applications are available on the district website or in the Clerk of the Board's office at 8169 W. Victory Rd., Boise, ID. Applications may be emailed to sharon.snider@boiseschools.org or delivered in person to the Boise School District Service Center, 8169 W. Victory Road, Boise, Idaho, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The application form must be complete.

September 26, 2025: Candidate applications are due by noon. They must be returned and signed by the applicant no later than noon on Friday, September 26, 2025. The form must be complete. All Candidate Applications received will be posted on the Boise School District website.

October 2, 2025: Special Board meeting at 3:30 PM in the Board Room of the District Services Center, 8169 W. Victory Road, Boise, Idaho, to consider applicants and consider an immediate appointment.

October 8, 2025: Special Board Meeting in the Board Room of the District Services Center, 8169 W. Victory Road, Boise, Idaho, to interview trustee candidate finalists and select a new Trustee.

October 13, 2025: The new Trustee will be officially sworn in at the Regular Board Meeting, which will be held at 6:00 p.m. in the Board Room at the District Services Center, 8169 W. Victory Rd.

The Board also voted to name Trustee Debbie Donovan as Vice President of the Board to fill the position held by Trustee Greeley.

Applicant Information

The seat held by the appointee will be up for election at the Board of Trustees regularly scheduled general election on September 1, 2026. If the appointee chooses to seek election to the Board, they will be required to file when the candidate filing period opens in June of 2026.

Qualifications of Trustees

To be eligible to serve as a Trustee an individual must be at least 18 years of age, an elector and resident of the Boise School District, and have no direct or indirect interest in District contracts. Before entering upon his/her duties, he/she shall take and subscribe an oath faithfully to perform the duties of his/her trust according to law; and no Trustee shall have any pecuniary interest, either directly or indirectly, in any contract with said District, or in any supplies furnished to or for said District, nor shall any Trustee be surety for the performance of any contract with the said Board or District, or the agent or partner of any contractor with said Board or District, and no action shall be maintained or recovery had against said Board or District upon any contract or obligation in which any Trustee is so interested, but the same shall be void.

Boise School District Announces Formation of Parent Advocacy Group

Boise, ID – (July 31st, 2025) – The Boise School District is proud to announce the formation of its inaugural Parent Advocacy Group, a new initiative designed to strengthen trust, foster open communication, and bring diverse family perspectives directly into conversations with district leadership.

The Parent Advocacy Group will begin meeting in September 2025 and will work closely with Superintendent Lisa Roberts, as well as Deputy Superintendents Wendy Johnson and Nick Smith. The group includes parent representatives from each of the District’s four high school attendance areas, Boise, Borah, Capital, and Timberline, as well as at-large members representing elementary, junior high, and high school families across the district.

“We know that building trust takes more than good intentions, it requires action,” said Superintendent Roberts. “This group is a step toward ensuring parents have a clear and collaborative space to share ideas, raise concerns, and celebrate successes. We’re committed to listening, learning, and making thoughtful decisions with families at the table.”

The purpose of the Boise School District Parent Advocacy Group is to:

Foster meaningful collaboration between families and district leadership
Amplify parent voices in district decision-making
Promote community engagement across all schools
Build a network of informed parent advocates
Encourage constructive dialogue and shared learning
Support a well-rounded educational experience for all students
Strengthen communication between families and the district
Ensure a wide range of perspectives are heard, understood, and valued

“In the Boise School District, we believe student success, strong communities, and mutual trust are the foundation of everything we do,” said Roberts. “These are not just ideals, they are shared commitments with our families. The Parent Advocacy Group is one more way we’re putting those commitments into action.”

Welcome to the 2025-2026 school year!

We’re excited to welcome your students back and provide nutrition meals throughout the year. Below is important information about our food service program, including meal prices and how to apply for free or reduced-price meal benefits.

Free & Reduced-Price Meal Applications

Students may qualify for free or reduced-price meals by completing a 2025–2026 meal application, available starting June 30, 2025. Eligibility is based on household income and number of household members. See the Eligibility Guidelines below for details.

Automatic Eligibility (No Application Required):

Free breakfast is available to all students at all schools.
Free breakfast and lunch are available to all students attending one of the following Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) schools:
Fairmont, Frank Church, Garfield, Grace Jordan, Hawthorne, Hillcrest, Horizon, Jefferson, Koelsch, Lowell, Lincoln, Monroe, Morley Nelson, Mountain View, Owyhee, South, Taft, Valley View, Whitney, and Whittier.
Students are automatically eligible for free meals if they are directly certified (DC) through:
SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program)
TAFI (Temporary Assistance for Families in Idaho)
Medicaid (income dependent)
Foster care, Head Start, or are classified as migrant, homeless or runaway
Supper meals are provided free to children enrolled in after-school enrichment programs at: Grace Jordan, Hawthorne, Hillcrest, Horizon, Jefferson, Koelsch, Morley Nelson, Taft, Whitney, Whittier, Hillside, and South.

How to Apply

To apply for free or reduced-price meals:

Online meal applications are encouraged and available on the district’s website.
Paper applications are available upon request by contacting the Food & Nutrition Services office. Translations are also available.

Important Notes:

Applications must be completed each school year. School year 2024-2025 benefits expire on September 23, 2025.
Only one application per household is needed.
You may apply at any time during the school year.
List all household members, their income, and sources of income to ensure your household receives the maximum eligible benefits.
An adult signature and the last four digits of the adult’s Social Security number are required (or indicate if none is available).
Foster children are eligible and can be listed on the same application as non-foster children.
Applications are reviewed by the district. Information may be verified at any time.
If you disagree with the decision, you may request a fair hearing by contacting Food & Nutrition Services (see contact information above).
Once approved, benefits last the entire school year.
Your eligibility may be shared with other district programs to help them evaluate or fund services, with review auditors, or law enforcement, if necessary, to help ensure the program is used fairly and correctly.

Note: Participation in WIC does not automatically qualify a student but may make them eligible.

Earlier this month, a new law went into effect restricting the display of flags and banners in our classrooms. While we will comply with Idaho law, we want to clearly communicate that we remain steadfast in our responsibility to creating inclusive learning environments where all students feel safe, welcome, and valued.

The Idaho Department of Education has enforcement authority for the new law and has issued guidance that includes broad definitions of "banner," "poster," and "expression.” The question was also raised as to whether or not the popular “Everyone is Welcome Here” sign would be banned under the new law. While the guidance provided by the State Department of Education implies that the sign would not be allowed, we will continue to support our teachers who choose to display it in their classrooms.

In a memo that went to all staff this morning, we provided a detailed analysis of the law, as well as guidance on how to address questions about classroom displays. As we wrote to our employees,

“The “Everyone is Welcome Here” sign affirms a foundational principle of public education—that every student, regardless of their background, is legally entitled to dignity, respect, and a sense of belonging in their school community. The sign is a reaffirmation of our legal and ethical obligation to provide an educational environment free from discrimination, our District’s Strategic Plan priorities to promote belonging, equity, and access, as well as our values of dignity, respect, responsibility, honesty and teamwork.”

Many other flags and banners, including the Pride Flag, are not allowed under the new law. We are, however, encouraging any staff member who is exploring ways to make their space feel safe and welcoming for all students to reach out to their principal or district administrator for advice.

Creating an environment where students feel welcome and affirmed is not an ideology—it’s our legal duty. We remain committed to upholding that duty.

This summer, students from seven Boise schools come together at Grace Jordan Elementary for a unique summer learning experience that shows learning doesn’t stop when the school year ends — it just gets more exciting.

One of the standout activities? Coding their way through twists and turns using Sphero Indy robot cars. As part of a hands-on STEM challenge, students program their mini race cars to navigate tracks they design, learning critical thinking, sequencing, and collaboration skills along the way.

“The robotics cars are super cool and adorable to watch the kids figure out!” says Summer School Principal Loren Bailly. “You can really see their confidence grow as they solve problems and work together.”

But the learning doesn’t stop with coding. Students also explore reading, math, and art — and connect with local partners like OnRamp, Delta Dental, BUGS, Ballet Idaho, and the Foothills Learning Center, who bring fresh experiences and real-world learning into the classroom.

Solar Energy is Coming to Whittier Elementary

(May 5, 2025 -- Boise, ID) – This summer, Whittier Elementary School will take a big step toward a cleaner, more sustainable future. As part of its strategic plan sustainability goals and its five-year action roadmap, the Boise School District is installing 340 solar panels on the school’s roof—an initiative designed to cut energy costs, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and provide students with hands-on learning opportunities in renewable energy.

Funding from tax credits provided by the Inflation Reduction Act will cover $129,600 of the total $360,000 cost. The investment is projected to pay for itself in 12 years. Consulting services to prepare for the project were paid for through savings realized by the district as a member of Idaho Power’s School Cohort and Energy Efficiency Programs.

“By saving energy and participating in programs like those offered by Idaho Power, we’re able to reinvest incentive funds into clean energy projects, allowing us to go further, faster,” said Alison Ward, Boise School District Sustainability Coordinator.

Once installed, the system is expected to offset approximately 53% of Whittier’s power usage, saving the school an estimated $14,560 in the first year alone. Even better, the system will include real-time data access so students and staff can monitor energy production and usage—making this both a sustainability project and a living lab.

“This project is about more than just saving money,” said Superintendent Lisa Roberts. “It’s about preparing our students to lead in a world where clean energy matters.”

Boise Schools is partnering with EGT Solar on the installation. The contract was awarded based on a public bid process held by the City of Caldwell on a similar project at the Caldwell Airport.

“EGT is thrilled to partner with the Boise School District on this project,” says Rob Black, CEO of EGT Solar. “With over 15 years of residential and commercial installation experience and 5,000 customers served, we have the technical expertise and the track record required to successfully complete a project of this scale.”

The City of Boise’s Planning and Zoning Commission is currently reviewing the project and district crews have begun initial site prep for the rooftop installation. To limit the impact on school activities, the project is estimated to be completed over this coming summer.

2025 Idaho Secondary School Principal of the Year

Boise, ID —04/29/2025 —Boise School District is proud to announce that Chad Wright, Principal of Les Bois Junior High School and incoming Principal of Timberline High School, has been named the 2025 Idaho Secondary School Principal of the Year by the Idaho Association of Secondary School Principals (IASSP), a division of the Idaho Association of School Administrators (IASA).

This statewide honor recognizes Principal Wright’s exceptional leadership, student-centered focus, and commitment to innovation and academic excellence. He will be honored at the IASSP Summer Conference on August 7, 2025, and has also been invited to national celebrations hosted by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).

As Idaho’s honoree, Wright joins a national cohort of top principals selected by NASSP from each state and U.S. territory. From this group, NASSP will name finalists and ultimately select one National Principal of the Year at both the middle and high school levels.

Throughout his time at Les Bois Junior High, Wright has championed personalized learning, strengthened school-community partnerships, and cultivated a positive and inclusive school culture. His leadership has resulted in improved academic outcomes, staff collaboration, and student engagement.

Valley View Elementary School

Boise, ID -- 04/09/2025 -- Last night, April 8, 2025, Boise School District leadership and Valley View Elementary School administrators met with Valley View families to share the results of an independent workplace investigation into reports of child abuse by a former special education paraprofessional. This meeting followed an initial community meeting held in January 2025, shortly after the District became aware of the reported incidents.

Superintendent Lisa Roberts addressed families directly, acknowledging the pain and trauma experienced by victims and their families, and reaffirmed the District’s apology to the entire Valley View community. The District remains committed to transparency, accountability, and taking meaningful steps to ensure student safety.

Expanding Career Pathways: A Look at CTE Success in Boise Schools

Boise School District is committed to preparing students for the future through Career Technical Education (CTE), and a recent update to the Boise School Board of Trustees highlighted the impressive growth and success of these programs.

A Strong Leadership Team

Under a newly restructured leadership model, CTE is thriving. Wendy Johnson, Area Director for CTE, ensures communication and alignment across programs, while Chelsie Wilson, K-12 CTE Program Advocate, oversees program development and funding. Alongside them, Jeff Roberts (DTEC Principal), Jen Keavney (CTE Student Opportunities Coordinator), and Brandon Hampton (CTE Industry Liaison) work to strengthen opportunities for students at every level.

Growing Participation & Impact

CTE participation in Boise Schools is on the rise, with a record number of students enrolled in courses at the Dennis Technical Education Center (DTEC). High school participation ranges from 43% to 50%, while junior high participation spans from 31% to 50% per school. These students gain valuable technical, employability, and life skills—better preparing them for life beyond graduation.

Industry Certifications & Career Preparation

Students are taking advantage of hands-on learning experiences through internships, apprenticeships, and work-based learning. The Tech Squad at DTEC, for example, not only provides IT support to the District but has saved over $30,000 in equipment costs. Meanwhile, students earned 2,342 industry certifications last year, including CNA, OSHA 10, and welding certifications, with more opportunities like phlebotomy and fiber optics training on the horizon.

Looking Ahead

CTE leadership is actively exploring new program pathways to align with high-demand careers and student interests. A recent survey of high school students is helping shape the direction for future course offerings, ensuring students have even more opportunities to develop in-demand skills for their future careers.

Whittier Students Explore Fresh Flavors in District’s Commitment to Well-Being

On February 26, 2025, Desiree Karst, RDN & Charlie’s Produce Account Executive, Bart, were guests at Whittier Elementary. The visit was an opportunity to educate students about our district’s commitment to providing students with healthy and fun food choices.

The focus during the visit was the district’s participation in The Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program, an initiative by the US Department of Agriculture to offer elementary schools a wider variety of fresh produce than what is available through regular USDA Child Nutrition Programs.

The item served that day was yellow dragon fruit. Students asked many questions and were great participants. Amy Griffin, 6th grade teacher at Whittier shared with them that there’s never a bite wasted - the kids love this program. Students gain an appreciation for farmers, an inquisitive mind for growing fresh fruits and vegetables, and generally, an open mind to trying new foods that they may start to recognize in their own local farmer’s markets and grocery stores.

Under the program, a fresh fruit or vegetable snack is provided 3-4 days per week to all students at the schools awarded the grant. This year the grant was awarded to 13 schools.

The Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) department procures items through their produce vendor, Charlie’s Produce. Typically the items are domestic, but it's a treat to surprise the students with non-domestic items if the price is right.

A big thank you to the hard working food service staff that prepare the items and the teachers that encourage the children to be adventurous and excited about fruits and vegetables. FNS hopes this grant continues to be available for many years to come!

Boise School District Teacher Erin Stutzman Earns Best of Green Schools Award

Awards Spotlights Organizations and Individuals Dedicated to Sustainability in Schools

[BOISE, IDAHO] – (March 4, 2025) – Erin Stutzman, a veteran educator in the Boise School District, has been named a 2025 Best of Green Schools Award recipient for the K - 12 category, presented by the Center for Green Schools at the U.S. Green Building Council and Green Schools National Network. The awards celebrate the hard work being done by people, schools, campuses and organizations to push the green school movement forward.

As an educator in the Boise School District, Stutzman empowers students through community outreach and project- and place-based learning, helping them use their voices to create meaningful change at local, state and national levels. In collaboration with Nez Perce youth and tribal elders in Lapwai, Idaho, her students have had the opportunity to learn from Indigenous customs and build partnerships around shared environmental goals. Together, they have secured rooftop solar panels through grant writing, advocated for climate action in schools and supported the nationally recognized Save Our T-Pack initiative to protect Idaho’s wolves.

“Erin is an excellent example of how classroom education benefits the overall sustainability goals of our school district,” said Lisa Roberts, Boise School District Superintendent. “Not only are our students learning science, but they are learning how a solid education combined with effective collaboration can lead to real-world change.”

Fairmont Junior High Hosts AVID Showcase, Preparing for National Revalidation

On Thursday, February 27, 2025, Fairmont Junior High School welcomed educators and visitors for an AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Showcase, offering a firsthand look at how the program empowers students to succeed. Guests included representatives from the Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School District in Ohio, staff members from the Kuna School District and other districts, as well as Boise School District’s AVID elementary staff.

What is AVID?

AVID is a structured, research-based College and Career Readiness System established over 40 years ago in San Diego, California. It is a school-wide approach to curriculum and rigor, impacting over 2 million students in more than 8,000 schools. The Boise School District first implemented AVID at Fairmont Junior High in 2006. Since then, the AVID system has expanded to all 13 secondary sites and two elementary sites in the district.

AVID Showcase Highlights

The event served as a valuable opportunity for Fairmont to demonstrate its AVID implementation as the school prepares to revalidate its national AVID Demonstration School status next year. Through interactive classroom visits, attendees observed AVID students engaged in collaborative learning activities guided by AVID-trained tutors and teachers. Visitors saw firsthand how students develop critical thinking, organization, and problem-solving skills that prepare them for high school and beyond.

AVID at the Elementary and Secondary Levels

What is AVID Elementary?

AVID Elementary introduces young students to the academic habits necessary for success in middle school, high school, and beyond. Students develop organization, study habits, communication, and self-advocacy skills in an engaging and age-appropriate manner. The program fosters a strong college-going culture where students are encouraged to think about future career and education goals, helping to close the opportunity gap before it begins.

Who are AVID Elective Students?

At the secondary level, AVID Elective students are those who aim to prepare for college eligibility and success beyond high school. These students demonstrate a strong work ethic, collaborate with peers, and take on rigorous coursework, including Advanced Placement (AP) and Concurrent Enrollment classes. AVID Elective students typically maintain a GPA between 2.0 and 4.0 and exhibit leadership potential and determination.

What is the AVID Elective?

The AVID Elective class supports students as they challenge themselves academically. It enhances their skills in note-taking, time management, organization, writing, and research while immersing them in a college-going culture. The class also includes structured tutorials facilitated by college students, offering additional academic support. Students gain exposure to college and career opportunities through field trips, guest speakers, and access to information on scholarships and admission requirements.

In addition to classroom observations, video interviews with AVID students highlighted the program’s profound impact. Students shared personal success stories, explaining how AVID has helped them set goals, improve study habits, and develop confidence in their academic abilities. BOISE, ID — High school students from the Boise School District and other schools in the Treasure Valley had the unique opportunity to engage with best-selling author Angeline Boulley at an event hosted by the Idaho Humanities Council today at Capital High School Auditorium.

Boulley, widely known for her debut novel Firekeeper’s Daughter, captivated the audience as she shared insights into her journey as a writer, offering words of encouragement to students who aspire to become authors themselves. She spoke about the challenges and triumphs of storytelling, emphasizing the importance of perseverance, authenticity, and the power of diverse voices in literature.

“We have to show that there is a wider market for our stories, that it's not a specific genre, that our stories are mainstream stories," Boulley told the students. "So for young adult literature, that means let's have more stories about Native communities, and you can see how different communities are—and that’s exciting to me.”

Her debut novel, Firekeeper’s Daughter, is a New York Times bestseller and winner of multiple awards, including the Printz Medal and the Morris Award. The book, a groundbreaking thriller infused with Anishinaabe culture and identity, has resonated with readers worldwide. She also discussed her other works, which continue to elevate Indigenous storytelling in young adult literature.

For students in the audience who dream of becoming published authors, Boulley had words of advice:

“Write freely, write whatever you want, let the words flow. Getting a book published is such a long process, and there's a lot of time for editing and revising, but don't hold yourself back when it comes to writing," she said. "And when you are editing, you can be in a different mindset and decide what should be removed. I had this mantra while I was writing, and it was: ‘I write to preserve my culture, and I edit to protect it.’”

Students had the chance to ask questions, gain insight into the creative writing process, and receive guidance on how to develop their own stories. Boulley encouraged them to draw inspiration from their personal experiences and to embrace their unique perspectives.

“I loved hearing about her writing process and how she didn’t give up on her story,” said one student in attendance. “It makes me feel like I can do it too.”

The Idaho Humanities Council, dedicated to enriching communities through literary and cultural engagement, organized the event as part of its ongoing efforts to connect students with influential authors and foster a love for reading and writing.

For students across the Treasure Valley, today’s event was more than just a talk—it was a reminder that their voices matter, and that with dedication and passion, they too can become storytellers.

Boise School District Expands Mental Health Support and Reports Positive Trends in Student Wellbeing

(Boise, ID, February 12, 2025) – The Boise School District continues to strengthen its commitment to student mental health, as outlined in an update presented to the Board of Trustees on February 10, 2025. The report highlighted significant progress in student wellbeing, expanded mental health resources, and ongoing efforts to address social isolation and stress among students.

Expanded Mental Health Support

To enhance student access to mental health resources, the district has added four new social workers across schools and one full-time counselor dedicated to supporting students at Boise Online School and the Treasure Valley Math and Science Center. These additions will allow for more group support opportunities and increased backing for the district’s Hope Squads, a peer-led suicide prevention program. Hope Squads are an elective class available at four district high schools and eight junior high schools. The district also successfully completed the Signs of Suicide program for students in grades 7-12.

Student Mental Health Data Shows Positive Trends

Findings from the Student Wellbeing Survey, conducted in partnership with Communities for Youth, show a marked improvement in key mental health indicators. The survey, conducted in late October 2024, concluded:

A decrease in students reporting thoughts of suicide.
Depression rates among students have decreased and are below the national average.
A strong correlation between having a trusted adult at school and lower depression rates, with 76% of students reporting that they have a trusted adult to turn to.

Priorities Moving Forward

Building on these positive trends, the district will continue its efforts to combat social isolation and stress while expanding mental health literacy and suicide prevention initiatives. Key focus areas include increasing participation in wellbeing surveys, refining school-level mental health programming, and prioritizing staff wellbeing to ensure educators have the support they need to foster a positive learning environment.

“Our data shows that we are moving in the right direction, but we know there is more work to do,” said Superintendent Lisa Roberts. “We remain committed to providing students with the mental health resources they need to thrive both in and out of the classroom.”

Boise School District Acquires Land Near Timberline High for Future Planning and Community Benefit

Boise, ID -- (02/11/2025) -- The Boise School District Board of Trustees has approved the purchase of a 1.86-acre property at 396 E. Linden St., adjacent to Timberline High School’s football field, for $3.4 million. The purchase includes three lots located directly west of Timberline High School’s track and practice football field.

The acquisition provides a rare opportunity for the District to expand its footprint in an area where available land is extremely limited. Board President Dave Wagers emphasized the significance of the purchase, stating, “Acquiring this property ensures that the District is not landlocked, giving us room to make future plans for it. This is a rare opportunity that allows us to be thoughtful about long-term planning.”

Board Trustee Nancy Gregory also noted the benefits of the acquisition for the surrounding community, adding, “This is an opportunity that is neighborhood-friendly and enhances the use of this property for both the District and the neighborhood.”

The purchase is being funded through the District’s Plant Facility Fund, which is specifically earmarked for land and facility purchases, as well as the maintenance and improvement of District facilities.

The Boise School District has been actively monitoring development proposals for this property and has engaged in multiple discussions with City staff, the Ada County Highway District (ACHD), and the developer regarding concerns about increased traffic and student safety. The developer ultimately approached the District with an opportunity to purchase the property rather than proceed with the planned residential development.

There are currently no immediate plans for the property’s development, but the District will consider its best long-term use to support students and the broader community.

Valley View Investigation Notification

Dear Boise School District Families and Staff,

Earlier today, we were notified that a former staff member at Valley View Elementary, Gavin Snow, died from a self-inflicted injury while being taken into custody by Boise Police. At the time, Mr. Snow was on administrative leave from the Boise School District and under investigation by Boise Police.

Families with students directly impacted at Valley View, as well as staff members, were notified this afternoon by Boise School District administrators, as well as representatives from the Boise Police Department. Boise Police also issued the following news release this afternoon.

The Boise Police Department, in partnership with the Boise School District, is investigating reports of the production of child sexual abuse material. The investigation began Tuesday afternoon when Boise School administrators learned of the reported allegations and immediately contacted Boise Police. Boise Police officers made contact with the 22-year-old suspect, Gavin Snow, and seized his electronic devices. Upon receiving a search warrant for these devices this morning, officers found evidence of child exploitation and production of child sexual abuse materials.

Just after 9 am today, officers attempted to arrest Snow at a home on the 5100 block of N. Mountain View Drive. When police arrived at the house, Snow injured himself and died from a self-inflicted injury. No officers used any force during the contact.

Snow was a Special Ed Assistant at Valley View Elementary School in Boise. Based on the evidence, detectives are concerned there may be additional victims. The Boise Police Special Victims Unit and the Boise School District are working with known victims and working diligently to identify any other victims should they exist. Anyone with additional information about the suspect is asked to call 208-377-6790. Those looking for victim services are encouraged to reach out to the Ada County Victim’s Services Center.

"Our department is committed to investigating all reported crimes, and we are working diligently to ensure justice for the victims in this case," said Boise Police Chief Chris Dennison. "Our focus remains on fully supporting the victims and their families while ensuring accountability through a thorough investigation."

As part of the 2024 Computer Science Education Week, Boise School District hosted the Hour of Code in partnership with the Idaho STEM Action Center. This annual event aims to introduce students to the exciting world of computer science and inspire the next generation of tech innovators.

This year, the event was made even more special with visits from state elected officials. Superintendent of Public Instruction Debbie Critchfield joined students at Monroe Elementary School, engaging directly with coding activities and encouraging them to explore the endless possibilities of technology.

Idaho State Senator Ali Rabe Semmelroth from Boise also participated, working alongside students as they tackled coding challenges. Her involvement underscored the importance of foundational computer science skills in preparing students for future careers.

Board of Trustees Approves New School Boundaries for Owyhee Elementary students

BOISE, ID – 12/10/2024 – At their regular December board meeting, the Boise School District Board of Trustees voted 6 - 0 to approve new boundaries for Owyhee Elementary School families.

The new boundaries were required following the District’s announcement last summer that Owyhee would transition from a traditional elementary school to an Early Childhood Learning Center beginning with the 2025 - 2026 school year. Under the now-approved proposal, new school boundaries for Hawthorne Elementary and Hillcrest Elementary will accommodate students living within the current Owyhee Elementary boundaries.

The Board recognized the months worth of collaborative work done by a Boundary Committee composed of parents, principals, administrators, the Hillcrest Neighborhood Association and Treasure Valley Safe Routes. Throughout the decision-making process, the Committee engaged in discussions about interests and carefully reviewed relevant data, including:

The importance of keeping the Owyhee community together as much as possible
Achieving balanced and appropriate enrollment across neighboring schools
Establishing safe walking and biking routes to school
Considering future residential developments within the proposed boundaries

The Board also reviewed public comments gathered throughout the Boundary change process and agreed that, while there are those who are understandably still disappointed with the conversion of Owyhee, the new boundaries reflect the shared interests in providing a clear, safe and smooth path forward for students and families at all three impacted schools.

Teams from Treasure Valley Math & Science swept the Boise State University Mathematics Invitational in all three categories, with one team placing first overall.

The annual Boise State Mathematics Invitational is a mathematics competition for all students in the Treasure Valley from grades 6 - 12. Teams celebrate the joy of mathematics by competing in a team math test, team problem solving, and an individual competition. We are proud of our Treasure Valley Math and Science Center teams that swept first place in all three categories.

Boise School District Selected for DOE's Energy Champions Leading the Advancement of Sustainable Schools Program

(Boise, ID -- 11/14/2024) Boise School District has been selected as one of 60 local education agencies in the country to participate in the 2024-2025 Energy Champions Leading the Advancement of Sustainable Schools (Energy CLASS) program. The one-of-a-kind energy management and training program will support Boise Schools in fostering healthier, more sustainable schools.

Boise School District is the only local education agency in Idaho selected to be part of the 2024-2025 Energy CLASS program.

The Energy CLASS program is a strategic initiative of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), in partnership with the Efficient and Healthy Schools Program, and is backed by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. As part of a cohort with 59 other local education agencies across 31 states, Boise Schools will receive training, coaching, and expert guidance to develop and execute projects prioritizing energy efficiency, renewable energy adoption, and improved indoor air quality.

“We’re thrilled to be part of this innovative cohort to advance sustainability efforts in schools across the country,” said Boise School District Sustainability Supervisor Alison Ward. “This is an exciting opportunity to engage with other school districts and local education agencies in a space where we can share ideas, gain invaluable guidance and support, and make meaningful progress toward our unique sustainability goals.”

Boise School District applied and was ultimately chosen for the Energy CLASS cohort because it “demonstrated a dedication to creating impactful or scalable energy plans and sustainability goals that align with the goals of DOE and can be successfully supported through the Energy CLASS program,” according to the U.S. Department of Energy’s announcement. Among Boise School District’s sustainability goals are expanding building energy efficiency programs, studying indoor and outdoor air quality, and further evaluating opportunities for clean renewable energy. The district also plans to embrace all curricular and workforce training opportunities for students and staff.

Beginning this month, Boise School District energy champions will engage with the New Buildings Institute (NBI) and Lawrence Berkeley National Lab (LBNL) to receive six months of resources, training, and tailored one-on-one expert advice to assist with Boise Schools’ individual sustainability goals.

The new Energy CLASS program, which builds on the success of previous Department of Energy initiatives, will explore topic areas including strategic energy management, project development, and funding pathways, while allowing collaboration with peers in the Energy CLASS network to share resources and knowledge.

In 2021, the Boise School Board of Trustees passed a Collective Commitment to Clean Energy, and has been faithfully involved in moving forward the district’s sustainability goals and initiatives ever since. The district has made progress each year in its sustainability efforts, such as the establishment of a “Green Team” in each school, school-specific efforts to reduce waste, district-wide energy-saving initiatives.

Participation in the Energy CLASS program is an exciting step in the Boise School District’s continued work to prioritize sustainability, improve energy efficiency across the district, and promote a healthy learning environment in our schools.

This powerful campaign, supported by The Office of Drug Policy and the Idaho Liquor Division, will see students place 30,000 reminder stickers on customer bags at local liquor stores. The message, “Ensure Brighter Futures: Never Provide Alcohol to Minors,” underscores the critical role adults play in safeguarding youth and preventing early exposure to alcohol.
Launching statewide on November 29, 2024, this campaign showcases the students’ dedication to spreading awareness about the serious consequences associated with underage drinking and promoting community responsibility.
The following video features heartfelt insights from Tara Haley, an AVID teacher at Frank Church High School, who emphasizes the importance of this message: “I have had students, who are now proudly sober, tell me that they were first given alcohol as a young child by an adult they trusted. I believe some adults do not realize the impact drinking young has on a child’s brain, behaviors, and possible future addictions. Adults also can face legal ramifications. I’m proud of my students for helping spread this important message.”

Boise School District has earned the Meritorious Budget Award every school year since 2003. The award recognizes the work of the District's administration, especially the District's Accounting Department and its team of professionals, who are committed each and every day to sound school financial management. Boise School District's Accounting Department is lead by Chief Financial Officer Sheila Kessel. "This is truly a district-wide effort and accomplishment," said Kessel.

In 2019, the District's commitment to serving as responsible stewards of taxpayer funds helped Boise School District become the first and only Idaho public entity (public bond issuer) to earn a Aaa bond rating from Moody's Investor Service. The Aaa rating is the top credit rating available for a government entity.

35 Boise School District Students Earn National Recognition from SAT College Board

Boise, Idaho – October 22, 2024 – Thirty-five students from the Boise School District have been awarded prestigious honors by the College Board's National Recognition Programs. These honors celebrate the academic achievements of underrepresented students who have excelled in their studies and performed well on eligible administrations of the PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10, or AP exams. Students receiving these awards may also be recruited by colleges actively seeking high-achieving, diverse students.

The National Recognition Programs recognize African American, Hispanic/Latino, Indigenous/Native American, first-generation, and rural/small town students. To be eligible for these recognitions, students must meet the following criteria:

Eligibility Criteria for National Recognition Programs:

Take the Fall 2023 PSAT/NMSQT (10th or 11th) or Spring PSAT 10 (10th) and score in the top 10% of test takers from their award programs in their state; or
Earn a score of 3 or higher on two or more distinct AP exams in the 9th and/or 10th grade; and
Earn a cumulative GPA of B+ or higher (at least 3.3 or 87-89%) by the time of submission; and
Identify as first-generation, Black or African American, Hispanic or Latino, Indigenous or Native, and/or attend school in a rural area or small town.

This year’s honorees include students from Boise High School, Boise Online School, Borah High School, Capital High School, East Junior High School, Fairmont Junior High School, and Timberline High School. Many of these students have demonstrated exceptional academic performance, contributing to the district’s commitment to educational excellence.

AP Capstone Diploma Recipients

Over 2,200 schools participated in the AP Capstone Diploma program, a project-based learning experience valued by colleges and universities across the U.S. and around the world.

Boise, ID -- 10/01/2024 -- In the Boise School District, 35 students have earned the AP Capstone Diploma™ and 21 students have earned the Advanced Placement Seminar and Research Certificate™ during the 2023-24 school year. That's up from 17 Boise District students who received the AP Capstone Diploma & AP Seminar and Research Certificate in 2018. The AP Capstone Diploma program helps students to develop critical thinking, research, collaboration, and presentation skills that are essential to academic success.

We proudly recognize the achievements of students who participated in the AP Capstone Diploma program,” said Lisa Roberts, superintendent, Boise School District. “With the help of our dedicated and highly qualified teachers, our AP Capstone students explored their passions through scholarly research as part of an impactful, multiyear program. This meaningful college readiness program will serve our students well after high school.”

To receive the AP Capstone Diploma, students must earn scores of 3 or higher in AP Seminar, AP Research, and on four additional AP® Exams of their choice. To receive the AP Seminar and Research Certificate, students must earn scores of 3 or higher in AP Seminar and AP Research. Student participation in the AP Capstone program has been steadily increasing, with over 100,000 students in over 2,500 schools worldwide taking part during the 2023-24 academic year. Approximately 21,000 students earned the AP Capstone Diploma, and 11,100 students earned the AP Seminar and Research Certificate.

Unlike traditional AP subject exams with a single end-of-year assessment, AP Seminar and AP Research assessments are project based and evaluate skills mastery through group projects, presentations, and individual essays completed throughout the year. Instead of focusing on one specific academic discipline, AP Seminar and AP Research are interdisciplinary: Students are encouraged to create research projects based on topics of personal interest. Students are assessed on the critical thinking, research, collaboration, time management, and presentation skills needed to complete their projects.

“We have been witnessing students’ renewed passion for learning through the AP Capstone program,” shared Bianca Peart, global lead of the AP Capstone Diploma program. “Together with the guidance of talented educators, students are building essential college and career readiness skills while exploring subjects that are meaningful to them.”

“Congratulations to the thousands of high school students who worked so hard to earn AP Capstone Diplomas and AP Seminar and Research Certificates,” said Trevor Packer, head of the Advanced Placement® Program. “These students are creating the pathways for their future academic and professional careers by building highly sought-after skills in project management, presentation, collaboration, and research.”

Board Approves Making Election Day a Non-School Day to

Allow Schools to Be Used Safely as Polling Locations

BOISE, ID -- 09/24/2024 --The Boise School District held a special meeting on Monday, September 23, 2024, to raise public awareness about the district's safety and security procedures in response to the recent surge of unsubstantiated social media threats affecting school districts across the Treasure Valley and the nation.

Prior to the meeting, the Board reviewed public online responses to the district’s safety & security procedures to gain insights and concerns from the community. This feedback helped guide the discussion during the meeting, ensuring that the topics addressed were relevant and reflective of community needs.

The meeting featured a presentation by district administration alongside the Boise Police Department. The presentation highlighted the extensive safety measures the Boise School District has implemented to ensure that our students and campuses remain secure learning environments. Attendees gained insights into the collaborative efforts of the district and law enforcement in addressing and investigating reported threats of school violence.

"Ensuring the safety of our students and staff is our highest priority," said Lisa Roberts, superintendent, Boise School District. "By working closely with the Boise Police Department, we aim to create a transparent environment where our community understands the proactive measures in place to protect our students and staff."

Board Approves School Year Calendar Adjustment

In addition to the safety discussions, the Board approved a revision to the 2024-2025 school year calendar. Tuesday, November 5, 2024, will now be a non-school day for students, allowing many school campuses to serve as polling locations for the upcoming General Election. With a high voter turnout expected for the presidential election, this change will help ensure a safe environment for both voters and students while assisting Ada County Elections in managing the polling process.

While students in grades Pre-K through 12 will not have school on November 5, staff will utilize the day for professional learning activities and have the option to work from home. Regular school schedules will resume on Wednesday, November 6, 2024.

National Merit Semifinalists Once Again

Boise, ID --09/19/2024 -- The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) has announced the Semifinalists for the 70th Annual National Merit Scholarship Program, and once again, the Boise School District stands out as Idaho’s top-performing district. A total of 28 Boise School District students have been named National Merit Semifinalists, representing 27% of the state's total Semifinalists (103) – the most from any district in Idaho. This is particularly impressive given that the Boise School District enrolls just 7% of Idaho's public school students.

“We are incredibly proud of this year’s 28 National Merit Semifinalists and their remarkable academic achievements,” said Boise School District Superintendent Lisa Roberts. “Having 27% of Idaho's National Merit Semifinalists come from our district, while we enroll only 7% of the state's public school students, is a clear testament to the academic excellence within the Boise School District.”

About National Merit Scholarship Program

Boise School District's National Merit Semifinalists are among more than 16,000 Semifinalists across the country who now have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 6,870 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $26 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship® award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. About 95 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and approximately half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar® title.

More than 1.3 million high school juniors in about 21,000 high schools entered the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2023 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.The number of Semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors.

To become a Finalist, the Semifinalist and a high school official must submit a detailed scholarship application, in which they provide information about the Semifinalist’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received. A Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT® or ACT® scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test.

From the more than 16,000 Semifinalists, more than 15,000 are expected to advance to the Finalist level, and in February they will be notified of this designation. All National Merit Scholarship winners will be selected from this group of Finalists. Merit Scholar designees are

selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous college studies, without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference.

Boise School District Trustee Election Night 2024

(Boise, ID -- 09/03/2024) -- Results from the 2024 Boise School Board Trustee Election will be available on the District's website beginning shortly after polls close at 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 3, 2024. There will be four reporting periods throughout the evening. The first report will include all absentee and early voting results. Results will also be posted on the District’s social media channels: X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, Threads and Facebook.

Boise Schools Again Recognized as Leaders in Energy Management

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recognized fifteen Boise School District facilities as “50001 Ready.” Achieving these 50001 Ready designations is “a clear indicator that your organization is a leader in energy management,” according to the DOE.

“Energy management is a continuous process of progress monitoring and adjustment. We work throughout the year with our staff and students to improve the certainty and reduce the risks related to energy usage," said Boise School District Sustainability Supervisor Ali Ward. “It is very satisfying to have the US Department of Energy recognize the progress we've made to improve health, safety and comfort in our schools."

As part of the district’s ongoing pursuit of Continuous Energy Improvement as a sustainability model, three additional facilities were added to the district’s list of “50001 Ready” designated facilities in 2024, with more on the horizon. The district’s supporting organizations, Idaho Power and Strategic Energy Group (SEG), have been instrumental in achieving the “50001 Ready” designations. Boise Schools are making sustainability and energy conservation part of every campus, even those that are not yet designated “50001 Ready.” The district is tracking electricity, natural gas, and water usage data by school, and all schools participate in energy-saving challenges during autumn and spring breaks. In addition, every school has a student-led “Green Team” that proposes project ideas on how to make their school more sustainable. Any student can bring ideas to their school’s Green Team members (“Green Ambassadors”), who then engage the Green Team Lead to advocate for the suggested solutions (such as LED lighting, or waste diversion efforts for example). Green Team project selection is based on the students’ excitement, the district’s capacity, and impact.

Completing the steps to achieve the 50001 Ready designation typically takes between 6-18 months. In 2023, the U.S. Department of Energy again recognized the Boise School District for achieving DOE 50001 Ready recognition at six junior high schools and three high schools. All of those facilities were again recognized in 2024.

What is ISO 50001?

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) developed international standard requirements with guidance for use for organizations committed to addressing their impact, conserving resources, and improving the bottom line through efficient energy management. The standard is known as ISO 50001. Designed to support organizations in all sectors, this ISO standard provides a practical way to improve energy use, through the development of an energy management system (EnMS). The standard aims to help organizations continually reduce their energy use, thereby reducing energy costs, greenhouse gas emissions, and reliance on fossil fuels.

What does it mean if a school is “50001 Ready?”

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recognizes sites that demonstrate energy management excellence and use the principles of ISO 50001 to achieve continual improvement in energy performance. Achieving the “50001 Ready” designation is “a clear indicator that an is a leader in energy management,” according to the DOE.

Boise School Board Approves Transition of Owyhee Elementary School to an Early Learning Center Beginning 2025-2026 School Year

Boise, Idaho — [August 13, 2024] — During the Boise School Board's regular monthly meeting on August 12, 2024, trustees officially approved the transition of Owyhee Elementary School into a new early learning center, serving Pre-K children (ages 3-5), beginning in the 2025-2026 school year. This change reflects the District’s ongoing commitment to expanding early childhood education opportunities and ensuring a strong educational foundation for the youngest members of our community.

Next Steps and Support for Families

To ensure a smooth transition, the District is committed to supporting families throughout this process:

Current Programs Unchanged for 2024-2025: Early learners ages 3-5 will continue participating in their current educational programs at Owyhee Elementary and other elementary schools (with the exception of the new Lincoln Early Learning Center - see information below) through the 2024-2025 school year, with no changes until the 2025-2026 school year.
Transportation: Starting in the fall of 2025, transportation will be provided to all early learners within the designated bussing zones for the new Early Learning Centers.
Boundary Information: In the coming months, the District will provide detailed information to teachers and families regarding the boundary lines for both the Owyhee Early Learning Center and the new Lincoln Early Learning Center.
Support During Transition: As preparations for the 2025-2026 school year progress, the District will share additional information on how it will support students and families as they transition to the new Early Learning Centers.

Transition and Boundaries Committees

To further support a smooth transition for Owyhee families, the Boise School District will establish two committees:

Transition Committee: This committee, involving parents and principals from Owyhee and nearby neighborhood schools (i.e, Hawthorne, Hillcrest, Whitney), will focus on making the transition to a new school as seamless as possible for students and families.
Boundaries Committee: Comprised of parents, administrators, and school staff, this committee will study and propose new boundaries for the nearby neighborhood schools. The committee will consider factors such as enrollment, transportation, and other services to ensure the most effective boundary changes.

Background Information

Boise School District has a long-standing commitment to early childhood education. For about 20 years, the District has operated an Early Learning Center on the north side of the District (Madison Early Learning Center). Earlier this year, the District announced the relocation and expansion of this center to the Fort Boise location, which has previously served as a swing space for elementary schools during bond construction projects. This new facility, named the Lincoln Early Learning Center, is currently being remodeled and equipped specifically for Pre-K students and will open at the beginning of this school year (2024-2025 school year). Research shows that inclusive learning environments, such as the District’s commitment to these early learning centers, help children with and without disabilities.

Celebrating Owyhee Elementary’s Rich History

As part of the transition, the Boise School District will be exploring ways to celebrate and honor the rich history of Owyhee Elementary School, ensuring that its legacy as a traditional elementary school (K-6) is remembered and cherished even as it evolves into an early learning center.

State-of-the-Art Facilities and Experienced Educators

The new Early Learning Centers (Lincoln and Owyhee) will feature state-of-the-art amenities and age-appropriate resources, designed to create an optimal learning environment. The District will continue to provide experienced educators who are passionate about fostering early childhood development.

Ballot Finalized for 2024 Boise School Board Trustee Election

(Boise, ID – July 24, 2024) – The official ballot for the Boise School Board Trustee Election on Tuesday, September 3, 2024 has been finalized. There will be only one race on this year’s ballot.

Initially, there were three separate Trustee races slated for the Election:

Race #1: for three trustee positions on the Boise School Board, each with a six-year term.
Race #2: for one trustee position on the Boise School Board with a four-year term.
Race #3: for one trustee position on the Boise School Board with a two-year term.

The following candidates have filed for this year’s election.

North Junior High School National Academic Champions

🏆 Congratulations to these North Jr. High students, who won a national championship in the 2024 National Academic Championships (NAC)! 👏 The NJHS team included 9th Graders Grady Noble and Scarlet Fields; 8th Graders Ike Snyder, Rachel Cooper, and Sonia Guyton and 7th Grader Christopher Irwin.The National Academic Championships feature competitive teams of four players each answering questions across various academic subjects, including literature, history, science, geography, math, popular culture, and current events. Teams nationwide compete in qualifying tournaments throughout the school year for a chance to advance to the National Preliminaries. Successful teams at this level then vie for a spot in the National Playoffs.

There were 40 teams throughout the nation who qualified for the National Preliminaries and 16 of those teams advanced to the National Playoffs. On their route to the championship, North Jr. High won all of their playoff games and averaged the most points per playoff game.

Boise School Board Approves Free Breakfast for All Students

Beginning 2024-2025 School Year

Boise, ID -- 06/11/2024 --“Starting with the 2024-2025 school year, all of our students will have access to a nutritious breakfast at no cost, ensuring that they can start their day off right,” said Dave Wagers, president, Boise School Board.

The move follows a recommendation from the District's administration, and is expected to bring numerous benefits, from improved academic performance to improved general health.

“Breakfast is often referred to as the most important meal of the day, and this holds especially true for students before they begin their academic day,” added President Wagers. “By providing free breakfast to all of our students, we are not only promoting health and well-being but also creating a more inclusive and supportive learning environment.”

“Studies show that a well-nourished child who starts the day with breakfast is more likely to be at school, a better learner, and ready to participate in the classroom,” explained Lisa Roberts, deputy superintendent and incoming superintendent, Boise School District. “In addition, by offering breakfast to all students, regardless of their financial status, we are fostering equality and inclusivity within our school communities.”

“Providing free breakfast normalizes school meals, helping to eliminate the stigma that school meals are for low-income students,” explained Christy Smith, supervisor, Food & Nutrition Services, Boise School District. “This new initiative also aims to reduce food insecurity among students and sends an important message to our students and families that good nutrition is critical to a healthy student and healthy learning environment.”

Also beginning with the 2024-2025 school year, breakfast and lunch will be free for all students attending the following Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) schools: Fairmont, Frank Church, Garfield, Grace Jordan, Hawthorne, Hillcrest, Horizon, Jefferson, Koelsch, Lowell, Lincoln Early Learning Center, Monroe, Morley Nelson, Mountain View, Owyhee, South, Taft, Valley View, Whitney, and Whittier.

‘Best High Schools’ Designation from U.S. News & World Report

Boise, ID – May 14, 2024 – Five secondary schools in Boise School District received the “Best High Schools” designation from U.S. News & World Report’s 2024 Best High Schools rankings. Boise, Borah, Capital, and Timberline High Schools earned high national and metro-area rankings, as did Boise Online School - Secondary.

The U.S. News & World Report 2024 edition of Best High Schools includes a numerical ranking of nearly all public high schools nationwide – almost 18,000 of them. According to U.S. News & World Report, the highest-ranked U.S. public schools in the 2024 Best High Schools rankings are “those whose students demonstrated outstanding outcomes above expectations in math, reading and science state assessments, earned qualifying scores on an array of college-level exams, and graduated in high proportions.”

Schools ranked in the top 40% nationally (#7,062 or better) achieved status as U.S. News “Best High Schools.”

Every Child Can Learn – Educational Support and Special Education for Students with Health, Medical or Developmental Concerns*

09/19/2023 -- A core belief of the Boise School District is that, with the right tools and opportunities, all students can achieve at high levels. The foundation of this commitment is our responsibility to provide every student with the supports and accommodations specifically designed to meet their individual needs and assure equal access to educational programs for disabled students.

This document explains the availability of special education services, a student’s right to a free appropriate public education, confidentiality protections, and the referral process. Those services may be delivered through either a 504 plan, or special education.

Does your student have a medical, health or developmental concern?

If a student you know has a medical, health or developmental concern that substantially limits a major life activity, they may be eligible for services under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.

If you know of a child with disabilities or developmental delays, who may have difficulty walking, talking, hearing, or learning, or may display behaviors that appear different from other children their age, they may be eligible for special education services under the IDEA.

Confidentiality

All 504 plans and Special Education records are confidential and shall not be disclosed to any third party without consent.

The Evaluation Process

With parent/guardian consent, an evaluation process and eligibility determination is made by a school team which consists of the parent/guardian and school professionals.

If a student is eligible for a Section 504 plan, the team will make a plan which identifies accommodations necessary to meet the needs of your student to the same extent as the needs of students without disabilities are met.

If a student is eligible for special education, the team will prepare and implement an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) to assure a free and appropriate education, in the least restrictive environment that may include related services, transition services, supplementary aids and services, and/or assistive technology devices and services.
